Allan McConnell’s Story

November 10, 2009

My parents married in 1940 and were living in Rathmines. My father was a member of the local LDF – probably an excuse for a few jars with the lads.

The bombs woke my parents. Dad jumped out of bed, ran down the stairs, grabbed his tin hat and headed for the door -the emergency meeting point in the event of a German invasion was the Rathmines Town Hall. My mother let a roar at Dad
” Charlie, where do you think you are going?”
Dad replied,
“I’m off to defend you from the Nazis” (or something similar)
“Well,” said Mum, “Don’t you think you should put some clothes on first…..”
